You cannot visit this country without exploring the capital city of Skopje, especially its Old Town, which is full of exquisite architecture from the Byzantine and Ottoman times. Badly damaged in 1963 by a devastating earthquake, the city has been rebuilt as a modern metropolis, and is now a modern European city in every way! Though most of the old architecture was damaged, parts of the old town still remain and some of the prominent tourist spots are the medieval fortress and the Ottoman-style bazaar.

Whilst in the region you could also visit Bitola, located just eighteen kilometres from the Greek border, this is the second largest town of the country. Bitola was an important Ottoman centre and is a major tourist attraction today! The ruins of ancient Heraclea is also near Bitola and is definitely worth visiting on one of our Tours of Bitola!

Another very famous and beautiful place to visit in the country is Ohrid, now an important tourist resort. Located on the shore of Lake Orhid, this is the place where the foundation of the first Slav University was laid by St. Clement. Ohrid was the capital city in the Macedonian kingdom of Tsar Samuil, back in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The fortress wall, which still survives today, is used as the venue for concerts, operas and plays in the summer. The eleventh century Cathedral of St. Sophia is one of the many beautiful churches, and is famous for its frescoes. The mountain slopes in the area vary from the mild rounded contours in the eastern part to alpine steepness in the west. With quite a few ski centres on the mountain slopes, such as Mavrovo (Bistra), the Popova Shapka on Shar Planina, Begova Cheshma (Baba), Oteshevo (Galichica), and Krushevo (Krushevo Mountain), you’ll no doubt have plenty to do during winter! This resort has something for everyone and is very popular with travellers.
